They Live mask

So, this Halloween I wanted to do something different. Each year I ended up buying a mask for I was a typical Zombie like everyone else.

After re-visiting the cult classic "They Live" by John Carpenter, I decided this year I would become one of the characters from the movie. To my surprise, there were no masks to buy in the stores or online, but I was able to find a tutorial, which can be found at
http://makeprojects.com/Project/'They+Live'+Alien+Masks/1571/1

I was excited to see someone took the time out to make something from scratch. Of course, with not much art experience in making things with my hands, I enlisted the help of my ex girlfriend, who is a whiz at creating things.

I followed the directions and shopped for the needed items so I could attempt to make this cool item that would be a custom item and not many people would have. Off we went to the craft and Halloween stores.

To my surprise, the how to page said this item would take "3-4 hours" and cost "around $15". Let me state on the record, this item took close to 2 weeks, and cost close to $100. I purchased the same items and have the receipt to prove my claim.

ANYWAY here is a photo reel of the product being made. I hope you guys enjoy. Any questions please send me an email.

I want to especially thank my ex girlfriend Erika who dealt with the process and enjoyed making the mask more than I did.

Photos did not want to post in order I took then but you will get the idea.

***please be advised that at the time of this post I am on the last step of gluing the eyes in.

  1. Homemade costumes are rarely ever the actual amount many of these makers say they are. Unless they have basically all the tools/paints used on hand. I create homemade costumes as well and each year tell myself to keep it cheap, but it rarely happens even it's something that uses cardboard. Really liked your blog post. I'll be trying my own hand at some They Live masks for this year. Good luck with yours as well! :)
